BACKGROUND
What is now called the Faculty of Education took its first inception as a pre-medicine department in 1983 G.C. when Jimma Institute of Health Sciences was first established. After ten years, in 1993 G.C. it developed to a program that was known as "Basic Science Program". It was again renamed Basic and Applied Sciences Program due to the intention of the faculty to launch degree programs in applied sciences. In 2001, the faculty was renamed as "Faculty of Sciences, Language and Liberal Arts" as it planned to train students in English language in addition to the applied sciences. Later the council of the faculty decided that it would be better to train students in teacher education of applied sciences, and hence, suggested the name Faculty of Teachers Education to enable the name of the faculty be self expressive. The administrative board of Jimma University, however, preferred to call the faculty "Faculty of Education", the name it bears now.
