Since the establishment of the then Jimma Institute of Health Sciences, Physical Education Department was under the supervision of Social Science Department as a unit. It was after the inauguration of Jimma University and the Establishment of the Faculty of Education, in September 2003, that this department has became independent to run its activity by its own as a Department of Physical Education and Sport.

The department has seven teaching fulltime staff members. In addition to teaching, the department organizes and prepares interfaculty competitions, mass sport activities, regional championship competitions, and the National Higher Institution Sport Festivals in different sport games.
